Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Now Streaming

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is now streaming on BBC America (in the US) and on international Netflix (everywhere except the US) in addition to various VOD providers. Adapted for the screen by creator Max Landis (Mr. Right), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is based on the Douglas Adams novel series of the same name. Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) as Todd and Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) as Dirk lead us on this incredibly wild adventure.

It is really difficult to try and discuss, or summarize, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency because number one, where would you begin? And, number two, everyone should really experience it for themselves. I have never been more confused watching a show than I was in episode one. By episode two I was invested in the story. I was bound and determined to solve the case by episode three. And then somewhere between episodes four and nine I fell in love with all of the characters. Well almost all of them. Of course, there were a few that weirded me out (as meant to). I’m mostly looking at you Gordon (Aaron Douglas).

In all seriousness, the cast is superb! No matter how many different roles you have seen these amazing actors in I can almost guarantee that you have never seen any of them quite like this. So often a new show will have one or two breakout characters that audiences are drawn to. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency has a dozen because each and every character fits perfectly into the puzzle. Remove one and the whole story would fall apart. If I had to choose just one of my favorite characters, besides Todd and Dirk, then I’d have to say Bart (Fiona Dourif), or the Rowdy 3 (Michael Eklund / Zak Santiago / Osric Chau / Viv Leacock), or Detective Estevez (Neil Brown Jr.), or Farah (Jade Eshete), or Amanda (Hannah Marks), or Ken (Mpho Koaho), or… Nope, I can’t do it. I can’t choose just one. They are all my favorites. How often does that happen? I mean besides never.

All in all, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is one of the most bizarre and insanely gratifying shows that I have ever watched. The moment the end credits rolled on season one I wanted to experience it all over again. Which makes me jealous of everyone who is just beginning the adventure. Which, by the way, if you are new to all of this I should probably mention that it is definitely not a show for the faint of heart. It’s a murder mystery so there will be blood. Lots and lots of blood. But, that said, there is also an adorable kitten and a cute corgi so it all balances out. Just note that once you start watching you won’t be able to stop. So get comfortable and prepare for a long binge session. Enjoy!

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is now streaming on BBC America, Netflix (international), and many VOD providers (like YouTube Red and iTunes). Be sure to search for “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” since there is another TV series just titled “Dirk Gently”.

It's been four decades since I first discovered a passion for movies. One momentous evening in 1977 my sister and brother introduced me to Star Wars and it forever changed my life. I relocated to Los Angeles after receiving a BA in Theatre and lived in the San Fernando valley for nineteen years. Besides acting and writing, I enjoy movies, music, theatre, relaxing at the beach or in the mountains, mastering racing games, traveling around the world, and hoarding chapstick. My husband and I are currently readjusting to life back in the States after spending three years living in Shanghai, China.
