If there’s one group that gives the biggest hint to what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will nominate later this month, its the PGA. The Producer’s Guild of America are the folks who make up a good chunk of the Academy, and 9 times out of 10 their shortlist matches up with the Academy’s Best Picture nominees.
This year, the PGA maintains a list of ten films, while the Academy has decided to use an odd algorithm that will create a list of nominees that number anywhere between five and ten. So out of these ten films below, at least five of them will get a Best Picture nomination:

- THE HELP (our review here)
- HUGO (our review here)
- THE IDES OF MARCH (our review here)
- MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (our review here)
- MONEYBALL (our review here)
- WAR HORSE (our review here)
If I had to guess? The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, and War Horse are the top five. They’ve all maintained their buzz very well in this increasingly long season, and while the Academy may let Midnight in Paris or Moneyball join the ranks and give a list of seven, I’d bet dollars to donuts that the five I’ve listed are the major contenders.
The Producer’s Guild of America will hand out the awards on January 21st, 2012.
